More than 1,000 reported deaths from Ebola
The WHO announced late last week that more than 1,000 people have died in the Ebola outbreak that’s been raging in the Democratic Republic of the Congo since last August. Health officials have confirmed 1,488 cases and estimate 1,029 deaths at last count. This outbreak is already the second deadliest in history and efforts to curb the spread of the disease have been stalled by attacks on response workers and treatment centers. Just last month, a Cameroonian doctor was killed during an attack on a hospital in the northern city of Butembo. The attacks have also hampered a vaccination campaign against the disease in the DRC. More than 100,000 people have also received an experimental vaccine against the disease that has thus far proven effective.
