Getting naloxone on airplanes
Reps. Jim Langevin (D-R.I.) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.) are circulating a letter to their congressional colleagues that would urge the Federal Aviation Administration to include the opioid overdose reversal drug naloxone on all flights. The new sign-on letter follows news reports that a man died after overdosing on a cross-country Delta Airlines flight. “This is not the first report of an overdose on an aircraft, and unfortunately it will not be the last,” the letter states.
The letter notes that airlines — namely Delta — have begun voluntarily carrying the overdose reversal medication on their flights, but that the FAA should require naloxone to be part of the emergency medical equipment package included on every flight.
The letter has eight signers so far, and has the backing of the national flight attendant union, which has been pushing for this change since at least February 2018. The letter will be sent Thursday.
