Inside STAT: Skeptic warns deep learning in medicine needs a reboot
While many companies and scientists are happily embracing the merging of artificial intelligence and medicine, the skeptics who are urging caution are less often heard. One such voice belongs to Gary Marcus, a tech entrepreneur, author, and professor of psychology at New York University. His view that the technology is currently getting off track, potentially setting society up for devastating consequences, has made him a controversial figure. In fact, in his new book, “Rebooting AI: Building Artificial Intelligence We Can Trust,” Marcus argues that AI is in need of a course correction if we are to prevent a period of investment and innovation dormancy from AI’s misfires. STAT’s Casey Ross spoke to Marcus, and STAT Plus subscribers can read their conversation here.
