1 in 7 kids diagnosed with ADHD or learning disability
New CDC data find that nearly 1 in 7 children were diagnosed with ADHD or some other learning disability in recent years, and that these diagnoses varied by race and income level. Here's more:
- Overall trends: Between 2016 and 2018, nearly 14% of children ages 3-17 had ever been diagnosed with ADHD or a learning disability. Those younger than 10 were less likely to be diagnosed than those older than that.
- Race: Black children had the highest diagnosis rates — nearly 17% — followed by white children and those of Hispanic origin.
- Income and parents' education: Those from families with an income that's less than 100% of the federal poverty level (~$26,000) were most likely to have received an ADHD or learning disability diagnosis, as were kids whose parents had a high school education or less.
