Covid-19: Federal social distancing guidelines extended until April 30
In a briefing yesterday, President Trump said the White House's guidelines to U.S. residents for social distancing would be in place until April 30 at least. Trump had previously clashed with health experts over wanting to lift restrictions by April 12, but the new timeline — a more than two-week extension — was lauded by top U.S. infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci as a "wise and prudent decision."
Here's more of the latest:
- Two new roadmaps — one from public health expert Ezekiel Emanuel and the other from former FDA head Scott Gottlieb — show how lockdowns in the U.S. could possibly ease up. Both plans rely on the U.S. ramping up testing and hospitals procuring the necessary equipment they need to battle the outbreak. STAT's Helen Branswell has more here.
- Fauci also told CNN yesterday that the U.S. could see millions more Covid-19 cases and between 100,000 and 200,000 more deaths. To date, the U.S. has reported more than 141,000 cases and nearly 2,500 deaths.
- With lockdowns and other distancing measures in place, one of the next public health threats to be on the lookout for is loneliness. STAT contributor Joanne Silberner has more here.
- Community health workers — laypeople who provide health services on a voluntarily basis — have been the backbone of Uganda's health system for two decades and will now serve as the main defense against Covid-19, writes James O'Donovan in a STAT First Opinion.
