A call to scientists: Share your bench skills (or reagents) to beat Covid-19

His lab shut down by coronavirus precautions like many others across the U.S., Michael Wells, a postdoctoral fellow at the Broad Institute, was walking home and wondering how he could still help. A neuroscientist who worked on Zika testing, he created a database with like-minded scientists to connect their skills (say, RNA extraction followed by qPCR testing), materials in short supply (reagents, swabs), and other assets. I spoke with Wells to learn more:

What’s your hope for the now 5-day-old project?
We are primarily targeting state and county health officials to identify talent in their area so they can quickly send an email to 30 people in their ZIP code who have experience.

What’s been the response to your call?
The database just hit 6,000. I've been working with EndCoronavirus.org and we’re all just a bunch of people who don’t know anything about each other but we’ve been in constant communication for the last four days.
