Congress approves emergency coronavirus funding
Things are changing rapidly — and constantly — on the coronavirus front, so here are some updates of note:
- Funding: Both the U.S. House and the Senate approved an $8.3 billion coronavirus response package, which President Trump is expected to sign today. The emergency funding includes $400 million for states and other local response teams to rev up their preparedness efforts.
- Cancellations: A major health tech conference scheduled for next week — called HIMSS – was cancelled after days of deliberation. Major medical centers, including Dana-Farber Cancer Center in Boston, have instituted no-business-travel policies in light of the outbreak.
- Case count: Diagnoses worldwide have topped 98,700, with nearly 3,400 deaths. More than 50 new cases were reported in the U.S., bringing the total number of cases to at least 215 across 18 states. The number of deaths from Covid-19 grew from 11 to 14.
