When public health emergencies and drug pricing collide … the DCCC pounces
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is out with new ads seizing on health secretary Alex Azar’s refusal to guarantee an affordable price point for a potential coronavirus vaccine. The ads call on seven vulnerable Republicans to say whether they agree with those comments (which Azar has since walked back.) See one here.
The ads are Democrats' latest attempt to use the coronavirus as a bludgeon against the Trump administration and Republicans writ large. Democrats have had plenty of fodder: Azar’s flub on the pricing of a vaccine has inflamed liberal Democrats as well as interest groups like Public Citizen; Democratic presidential candidates like Mike Bloomberg and Sen. Elizabeth Warren have used Trump’s lack of expertise to bolster their campaigns; and a recent whistleblower complaint over HHS’ handling of an early federal response to the outbreak has already spurred calls from Democrats for Azar to resign.
