Wuhan, Chinese coronavirus epicenter, raises number of virus fatalities by nearly 50 percent

China raised Wuhan’s coronavirus death toll by nearly 50 percent on Friday, following weeks of allegations that officials were underreporting its numbers. The city where the coronavirus outbreak is believed to have originated is now reporting 3,869 deaths after adding 1,290 to its previously announced figure. The number of total coronavirus cases in Wuhan also raised by 325 to 50,333, accounting for about two-thirds of China’s 82,367 reported cases.

The change in numbers only compounds U.S. leaders’ suspicions of a cover-up, at a time when American intel work in the Asian country may be hindered following a purge of a U.S. network in recent years.

Meanwhile, President Trump and some governors across the country have rolled out plans to reopen the U.S. economy, offering a glimmer of hope since the nation has been shuttered to reduce the spread of coronavirus. However, a timeline remains elusive and will vary by state.

Still, a growing wave of rallies are taking place across the country as protesters demand that state governments lift their orders closing businesses and public places as soon as possible.

Kelly Craft, U.S. ambassador to the U.N., backed President Trump’s decision to pause funding to the World Health Organization, accusing the agency on Friday of lacking both the trust and transparency needed in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

The experimental COVID-19 treatment remdesivir is showing promise in a Chicago clinical trial, according to the health news site STAT.

And Ford and GE have signed a $336 million contract with the federal government to build ventilators for the coronavirus fight.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin urged Americans who have not received their stimulus check to make sure their direct deposit information has been shared with the Internal Revenue Service via the new “Get My Payment” tool, which allows people to provide their bank information in order to get the funds.

Republican South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem hit back at critics who accused her of being too lax with her coronavirus response after there was an outbreak at a meat processing plant in the state.

A Texas woman whose husband died of the coronavirus filed a lawsuit against Princess Cruises, claiming that she and her spouse were allowed on board even though the crew knew they’d be exposed, according to a new report.

COVID-19, the disease that has caused the coronavirus pandemic, is a respiratory illness that has symptoms that can include fatigue, a persistent cough and fevers. However, researchers in Spain believe they have discovered another symptom — lesions on feet.
