White House Coronavirus Task Force to announce new face covering guidelines; More than 700K jobs lost in March


The White House Coronavirus Task Force is said to be preparing to announce new guidelines formulated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that recommend Americans in areas hit hardest by the novel coronavirus wear some type of facial covering while out in public. The change in guidelines signals a major shift in how officials are looking to combat the spread of COVID-19.

The U.S. economy lost 701,000 jobs in March, snapping a decade-long record of employment growth, as strict measures to contain the coronavirus pandemic shuttered businesses and forces Americans to stay at home. It’s the first decline in payrolls since September 2010 and the steepest since March 2009 during the Great Recession. The unemployment rate jumped to 4.4 percent, up from a half-century low of 3.5 percent in February.

A California doctor told "Fox & Friends" that one of his patients is seeing the promising effects of a possible breakthrough treatment using plasma, which they decided to try after several other options had failed. Meanwhile, scientists are suggesting hydroxychloroquine could be the most effective alternative to treat the coronavirus. White House Coronavirus Task Force member Dr. Anthony Fauci on Friday urged caution, telling “Fox & Friends” that thorough research is still needed. 

On the vaccine front, scientists with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine say they may have found a potential option.

Louisiana is growing as an emerging hot spot as it logged a record 2,726 new coronavirus cases Thursday – a 42 percent increase from the day before. Officials warn New Orleans-area hospitals could soon be overwhelmed, according to a report.

And the hospital system set up for nation’s veterans is ill-equipped to handle the coronavirus pandemic, according to a new report from the VA’s Office of Inspector General.
