Democratic leaders highlight U.S. pandemic response at DNC
On the penultimate night of the Democratic National Convention, the Covid-19 pandemic dominated the health care conversation. In an apparent dig at the Trump administration’s embrace of unproven therapies and theories about Covid-19, former president Barack Obama said that “our ability to work together to solve big problems like a pandemic depends on a fidelity to facts and science and logic and not just making stuff up.” And Sen. Kamala Harris, accepting the nomination for vice president, didn’t mince words about the pandemic’s effect on minority communities. “Black, Latino, and Indigenous people are suffering and dying disproportionately. This is not a coincidence: It is the effect of structural racism,” she said. Harris added: “This virus, it has no eyes, and yet, it knows exactly how we see each other and how we treat each other.”
