Hundreds of thousands inoculated against Covid-19
China has given hundreds of thousands of people two experimental vaccines against Covid-19 under an emergency use authorization.
China National Biotech Group (CNBG), a unit of state-owned drug manufacturer Sinopharm, said its vaccines have been shown to be effective so far, with no single case of infection reported.
The vaccines were first tested on senior executives at Sinopharm, before it was offered to other employees.
Since late July, China has granted emergency use authorization to three other experimental vaccines — two from CNBG and one from Beijing-based SinoVac Biotech – for use by people considered to be at high risk of infection, such as medical staff and essential workers in the services sector. About 90% of SinoVac employees and their families have received its vaccine, the company’s CEO told Reuters last week.
CanSino Biologics’ vaccine, co-developed with China’s Academy of Military Science, has been used by the military since June.
