In Massachusetts today, a window into 2021 health policy
Voters head to the polls today in Massachusetts, and a few major primary elections there could hold major ramifications for the health policy landscape in 2021. Richard Neal, the chairman of the powerful Ways and Means Committee, is facing attacks about his ties to “Big Pharma” and other corporate health care interests, from his challenger, Alex Morse, the Holyoke, Mass., mayor.
The American Hospital Association has rushed to Neal’s defense. According to Politico, the group has dropped nearly $500,000 in ads to bolster Neal, whose committee has at least partial jurisdiction over health care issues ranging from surprise billing to drug prices. If he loses, one of the next members in line to chair the committee could be Rep. Lloyd Doggett — an outspoken progressive and the author of some of the most aggressive drug pricing legislation ever introduced in Congress.
Another race worth keeping an eye on: Rep. Joe Kennedy’s primary challenge to Ed Markey, the veteran Democratic senator who has long played a lead role crafting legislation to fight the opioid crisis. Kennedy currently holds a seat on the House’s other health-focused committee, Energy and Commerce. And though he’s supported drug pricing reforms, Kennedy has been criticized for maintaining a stock portfolio that includes as much as $1.7 million in equity in major pharmaceutical companies.
