A gaggle of investors. A shimmering “Science City.” And a surefire confidence that drug development in China is faster, cheaper, and more efficient than anywhere else in the world — including the United States.
STAT’s Jason Mast flew to Shanghai to witness a two-day biotech summit that featured a frenzy of dealmaking as everyone tried to cash in on Chinese-designed drugs, which now make about a third of the world's pipeline and draw more than half of all licensing or collaboration deals. The Chinese Communist Party is confident that its drug developers will have at least five blockbuster drugs by 2030.
