The aim of this 57-page document is to support countries in developing and conducting simulation exercises to test and validate their national pandemic influenza preparedness plans. It is intended to provide practical guidance on how to select, plan, conduct, and evaluate simulation exercises specific to pandemic influenza preparedness and response. This guidance should be used in conjunction with four other WHO guidance documents on pandemic preparedness, listed below.

This one-hour, 37-minute video describes the fundamental concepts of developing an Emergency Action Plan (EAP) for an active shooter scenario. It guides viewers through important considerations of EAP development, utilizing the first-hand perspectives of active shooter survivors, first responder personnel, and other subject matter experts who share their unique insight.

This 34-minute video features speakers from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration who discuss, with first-hand experiences, how challenges caused by the hurricanes of 2017 on the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico were met. They provide vital information needed to assist elderly individuals and their families when preparing for, responding to, and recovering from the impact of hurricanes.

This 96-page report describes a conceptual exposure model based on a review of the literature on fate and transport of pathogens when present in wastewater systems. Key uncertainties were identified in the event of shedding of infectious pathogens and the potential for formation of bioaerosols, spillage, and other releases associated with the toilet flush, wastewater treatment processes, maintenance and/or repair.

This 74-page document summarizes elements that should be considered when planning, developing, and implementing a sampling and analysis plan (SAP) for microbiological contamination incidents in which the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) would be responsible for conducting sampling and analysis. It is intended to be an informational companion to users of the EPA’s Microbiological Sampling and Analysis Plan (MicroSAP) tool.

This 25-page report summarizes the review of a subject matter expert panel regarding design, concept, results, and future of the U.S. EPA Water Security Test Bed. The Water Security Test Bed is a full-scale portion of drinking water distribution and household plumbing system that is contaminated with chemical, biological, and radiological contaminants and then various decontamination and water treatment technologies are evaluated for their efficacy.

This 12-page document focuses on the processes of national pandemic influenza preparedness planning. The aim is to ensure that when countries develop or update a plan, the objectives are clear, and the essential steps and actions are taken. It should be used in conjunction with A Checklist for Pandemic Influenza Risk and Impact Management: Building Capacity for Pandemic Response.

The objective of this 33-page report was to evaluate the persistence of radioactive cesium-137 (Cs-137), on concrete-lined, copper, and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe, and possible decontamination approaches. During this study, conditions within operational drinking water pipes were simulated using annular reactors (ARs) (i.e., ring-shaped reactors). These results suggest that potassium chloride (KCl) would be a better decontamination agent compared to ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) since the decontamination performance is comparable, and KCl does not corrode the copper pipe.

This 118-page report evaluated several key studies conducted in the early 2000s to establish the current state-of-the-science and practice for source water early warning systems (EWSs). Contamination incidents have been caused by a wide range of sources, including industrial and transportation related spills, non-point sources and urban runoff, intentional contamination, and natural processes. The report also identifies key research areas that need to be addressed to improve EWSs.

This eight-page report provides information and statistics about natural disasters in 2017, which was characterized by a higher number of reported storms, with 127 compared to the annual 98 average. Similar patterns were seen with wildfires, with 15 compared to the annual nine average, and landslides, with 25 compared to the annual 17 average. The data reported suggest an emerging trend in natural disaster events demonstrating lower mortality but higher cost. Data come from the Emergency Events Database (EM-DAT).

This 20-page issue of the Disaster Technical Assistance Center Supplemental Research Bulletin focuses on mental health and substance use (behavioral health) conditions in children and adolescents following exposure to natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes. It discusses the challenges faced by children and adolescents following natural disasters; sheds light on behavioral health consequences (such as PTSD, depression, and acute stress disorder) of being exposed to traumatic events; and presents various ways to reduce lasting impacts of such events.
