Welcome!

Since the last issue of Health Equity Matters, our nation bid farewell to Secretary Margaret Heckler and Senator John McCain. Secretary Heckler was a decorated public servant who held elected office as a Congressional representative from Massachusetts, served as U.S. Ambassador to Ireland, and was Secretary of Health and Human Services during the Reagan Administration. She is most known among minority health advocates for commissioning the landmark 1985 Secretary’s Task Force Report on Black & Minority Health which continues to anchor federal initiatives to reduce racial and ethnic health disparities. Secretary Heckler championed women’s rights and opposed discrimination against women across different social contexts. During her confirmation hearings, she is reported having said, “I want to be a catalyst for caring in America.” Thank you, Secretary Heckler, for caring about communities that experience largely preventable health disparities and spawning more than 3 decades of national efforts to ensure healthy lives for everyone! Both Secretary Heckler and Senator McCain exhibited principled, compassionate, and visionary leadership. Their examples and legacies will endure for generations to come. We salute and honor these extraordinary public servants and global leaders! Read more from OMHHE Director, Dr. Leandris Liburd.
