Another lawsuit over Roundup cancer claims gets underway today

A federal court case gets underway today over allegations that Monsanto's weedkiller Roundup — which contains a chemical called glyphosate — caused a California man's cancer. Edwin Hardeman is one of hundreds of people who have sued over claims that Roundup can cause cancer, though some experts and Monsanto say studies have shown no link between cancer and glyphosate. Hardeman’s claims aren't the first to go to court. Last year, a California jury awarded $289 million to a groundskeeper who claimed Roundup contributed to his cancer, though a judge later reduced that award. But Hardeman’s lawsuit could be seen as a bellwether for hundreds of other cases consolidated into the same San Francisco federal court that’s overseeing the case.
