Who should — and shouldn’t — get genetic testing?

Here are two true things: One, genetic testing can provide life-saving information for cancer patients, but, two, not everyone actually benefits from the results, which can sometimes do more harm than good.

So what should the medical community do? Dr. Laura Esserman, a breast cancer surgeon at the University of California, San Francisco, joined our podcast this week to discuss exactly that.

“As always, more information is not always better,” Esserman said, adding that factors like age and family history can be just as important as DNA. “We now know that breast cancer is many diseases…. So it doesn’t make sense that every woman is at risk for the exact same cancer or has the exact same risk.”
