Malaria, cholera cases emerge in Mozambique in cyclone’s wake
Cases of cholera and malaria have emerged in Mozambique after Cyclone Idai ravaged the nation earlier this month, killing more than 400 in that country alone. “There is growing concern among aid groups on the ground of potential disease outbreaks,” said a statement from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. Cholera cases have been reported in the port city of Beira, the statement said, as have an increasing number of malaria infections among people trapped by flooding from the cyclone. Some cases of typhoid have been reported in an inland area of Mozambique, according to Al Jazeera. IFRC has requested $10 million from governments to help with relief efforts, including providing sanitation and hygiene.
