Trump looks to outlaw 'surprise medical bills'
In another move to curb the high cost of health care in the U.S., President Trump yesterday urged Congress to pass legislation to outlaw surprise medical bills. Patients usually receive exorbitant bills when they inadvertently — often in emergency situations — visit a physician or use a health care service that is out of their insurance network. Although Trump didn’t outline any specific proposals, legislators in Congress have proposed policy ideas that would prevent doctors from directly billing patients, and instead work with insurance providers to negotiate the bill. Some states, including New York and California, have also put in place protections for patients against such surprise bills.
Trump also signaled yesterday that his administration may approve a Florida plan that would allow the state to import certain prescription drugs from Canada for lower prices for its residents.
