HHS Awards Nearly $400 Million to Combat the Opioid Crisis
August 8 - Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) awarded nearly $400 million to combat the nation’s opioid crisis. The investments will enable HRSA-funded community health centers, rural organizations and academic institutions to establish and expand access to integrated substance use disorder and mental health services.
The awards support HHS's Five-Point Opioid Strategy, introduced under President Trump in 2017. The number of patients receiving medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid addiction at HRSA-funded health centers increased 142 percent from 2016 to 2018 and, since President Trump took office, the number of patients receiving buprenorphine, a common form of MAT, has increased 28 percent.

Meet HRSA Acting Administrator Thomas J. Engels
Thomas Engels became Acting Administrator for the HRSA on August 1. HRSA is the primary federal agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services responsible for improving access to health care for people who are geographically isolated and economically or medically vulnerable. As Acting Administrator, Mr. Engels oversees the execution of HRSA’s $11.7 billion annual budget (FY 2019) that is used to expand access to quality health care through an array of grants to state and local governments, health care providers and health professions training programs.

2018 Health Center Program Data Released
The new Uniform Data System (UDS) data are out and show that health centers continue to provide increased access to high quality, value-based, comprehensive primary care for their communities. Health centers treat one in 12 people nationwide, one in every nine children, and are increasingly well-positioned to meet the nation’s most common and pressing health care needs, as well as emerging health priorities.

Ending the HIV Epidemic Initiative

Earlier this week, public health leaders and members of the HIV community in Missouri met with HRSA Associate Administrators Laura Cheever (HIV/AIDS Bureau) and Jim Macrae (Bureau of Primary Health Care) to discuss the Ending the HIV Epidemic: A Plan for Americainitiative and the progress being made in the state. Missouri is one of the seven states with substantial rural HIV burden that is a focus jurisdiction for the initiative. HRSA's Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program and HRSA-funded Health Center Program recipient KC CARE Health Center co-hosted the community engagement event in Kansas City to facilitate a dialogue about how best to end the epidemic in the state.
Through the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program and the Health Center Program, HRSA is playing a leading role in helping to diagnose, treat, prevent, and respond to end the HIV epidemic.

The Ryan White CARE Act Turns 29
August 18 will mark the 29th anniversary of the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act. First authorized in 1990, the Ryan White CARE Act is the legislation that created the HRSA HIV/AIDS Bureau (HRSA HAB) Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program.
The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program provides a comprehensive system of HIV primary medical care, medications, and essential support services for low-income people with HIV. The Program funds grants to states, cities/counties, and local community-based organizations. More than half of people with diagnosed HIV in the United States – more than 500,000 people – receive services through the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program each year. In 2017, 85.9% of Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program clients were virally suppressed, exceeding national average of approximately 59.8%.
The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program is a critical component of the “Ending the HIV Epidemic: A Plan for America” initiative, which was announced earlier this year during the State of the Union address.

The top entries from Phase 1 of the four Challenges each won a share of a $100,000 prize. Now these Phase 1 winners are coming to HRSA to demonstrate their innovations to a panel of judges and compete for a share of a $125,000 prize per Challenge and an opportunity to move to the third and final phase of the competitions. Final winners can win up to $150,000.
