U.S. sees jump in weekly measles cases
There were 21 new cases of measles reported to the CDC as of last week, more than double the number logged in the previous week. The jump indicates that measles continues to be a problem in the U.S.: 1,203 people have become ill with the disease in more than 30 states this year, four of which are still battling outbreaks.
The resurgence of measles is also affecting other countries. The U.K. government said yesterday that it would call a summit to lean on social media companies to do more to combat misinformation online about vaccines. Some 87% of children in the country have received both the recommended doses of the measles vaccine, but health officials say 95% of the population needs to be immunized to prevent outbreaks.
