Planned Parenthood withdraws from Title X program
Planned Parenthood is withdrawing from the Title X program that provides federal health care funding for low-income families. Changes announced by the Trump administration earlier this year required Title X funding recipients to no longer provide abortions or refer patients to abortion providers, and yesterday was the deadline to submit a plan for compliance. “We cannot comply with the gag rule,” Alexis McGill Johnson, acting president of Planned Parenthood, told reporters during a call, adding the rule was unethical for limiting what doctors can tell patients about abortions. The organization has set up emergency funds to make up for the loss, but Johnson said it’s “like holding an umbrella during a tsunami.” Some 40% of the 4 million people who rely on Title X funding get care — including cancer screenings and STD testing — at Planned Parenthood, according to the agency.
