A large drop in income could also mean an increased risk for heart disease

new study finds further evidence to support the notion that income can influence health. Researchers looked at data from nearly 9,000 people enrolled in a study assessing the risk of arterial disease, and assessed cardiovascular risk after a 17-year follow-up period. Those who experienced at least a 50% drop in income — from around $40,500 to $14,600 — during the study had a 17% elevated risk of developing cardiovascular disease compared to those whose incomes stayed relatively the same. Those who saw a drop in wages also had a higher rate of heart attacks and fatal heart disease. In contrast, those whose income increased by 50% saw a 14% reduction in their risk of developing heart disease compared to no change in income.
