A large drop in income could also mean an increased risk for heart disease
A new study finds further evidence to support the notion that income can influence health. Researchers looked at data from nearly 9,000 people enrolled in a study assessing the risk of arterial disease, and assessed cardiovascular risk after a 17-year follow-up period. Those who experienced at least a 50% drop in income — from around $40,500 to $14,600 — during the study had a 17% elevated risk of developing cardiovascular disease compared to those whose incomes stayed relatively the same. Those who saw a drop in wages also had a higher rate of heart attacks and fatal heart disease. In contrast, those whose income increased by 50% saw a 14% reduction in their risk of developing heart disease compared to no change in income.
