House panel to examine policy to deport critically ill immigrant children
It’s another busy day in Washington. First up, the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is holding a hearing on the Trump administration’s policy to deport critically ill immigrant children. Back in August, the administration adopted an unofficial policy that denied non-U.S. citizens the chance to stay in the country to get treatment for life-threatening conditions. The policy was reversed in September, but committee members say that officials behind the policy haven’t produced documents to clarify the decision, nor is it clear whether new restrictions will now be applied that could keep children from getting medical care.
Also happening today: A health subcommittee of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs will examine Native American veterans’ ongoing problems with accessing health care. One issue: Native Americans are often forced to seek care at troubled hospitals run by the Indian Health Service, a division of HHS.
