Trash samples reveal more evidence that teens are using flavored vaping products

In an interesting new study from the CDC, garbology data — collected from analyzing trash — confirms what surveys have revealed: Teens are increasingly using flavored e-cigarettes. Scientists analyzed nearly 900 waste samples at a dozen public high schools in the San Francisco area and found that 19% of the waste came from e-cigarettes, including flavor pods and pod caps. Almost all the Juul or Juul-compatible waste items were found in schools with students from middle- and high-income backgrounds. And 99% of the Juul flavor pods were of flavors other than tobacco — most frequently mint — adding evidence that vaping flavors are popular among youth. Some 70% of the waste items were cigarette butts, while waste from cannabis made up less than 2% of the samples.
