UNC, SUNY are the latest to end deals with Elsevier
Two major universities — the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the State University of New York at Stony Brook — have joined the University of California system and others in ending publishing deals with Elsevier. Last week, UNC announced that it would be canceling its deal with Elsevier after failing to reach a deal after more than a year of negotiations. UNC's deal with Elsevier currently includes access to more than 2,000 Elsevier journals, but that deal will expire April 30 because renewing the deal would cost UNC $2.6 million.a year, a price that the school called "unaffordable and unsustainable." SUNY also announced that it would not renew its current deal. Instead of completely severing ties, SUNY's new deal will allow access to the 250 Elsevier journals most used and accessed across the university. University staff will also get a 10% discount on the processing fees required to publish in Elsevier journals.
