KFF Examines The Extent to Which States Are Providing Health Benefits to Medicare-Eligible Retirees Through Medicare Advantage
A KFF review of state government retiree health benefits finds that a dozen states offer health coverage to their Medicare-age retirees only through Medicare Advantage plans. It’s part of a broader trend of employers moving retiree benefits to Medicare Advantage, which may help state governments and other employers reduce their costs and simplify administration of such benefits.
The shift presents tradeoffs for beneficiaries, however, particularly those who prefer coverage under traditional Medicare. Until fairly recently, employer-sponsored health benefits for Medicare-age retirees were typically designed to supplement, wrap around or coordinate with traditional Medicare. The analysis provides state-level info about states’ retiree health coverage.
