Federal regulators issued a beefed up health insurance pricing transparency mandate on Monday. The final rule from the Health and Human Services, Labor, and Treasury departments is meant to improve the standardization, accuracy and accessibility of data revealing how much health insurance companies and group health plans pay providers for care. The regulation builds on a 2025 executive order and complements the government’s ongoing hospital price transparency efforts. (Early, 10/5)

President Trump has approved the execution of Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the U.S. Army officer who killed 13 people and wounded 32 others in the 2009 shooting at Fort Hood in Texas, the deadliest mass shooting at an American military base. Sean Parnell, a Pentagon spokesman, said on Monday that Major Hasan would be executed by firing squad, adding that the secretary of the Army would set the time and place of the execution. If the order is carried out, Major Hasan, 56, will be the first person to be executed through the military justice system since 1961. (Cameron, 10/5)

The Trump administration says none of this is happening. “DHS is NOT arresting U.S. citizens by mistake.” “There are no ‘indiscriminate’ stops.” Allegations of “racial profiling are disgusting, reckless and categorically FALSE.” “The pattern is NOT of law enforcement using force.” “ICE does not zip tie or restrain children.” But that is precisely what is happening, and at a far larger scale than previously reported. The New York Times: Biden-Era Memo On Covid And Schools Set Off Dispute In Justice Dept.
The Trump administration released a report showing career officials had objected to the 2021 memo as evidence that the policy was biased against conservatives. But in an ironic twist, the administration has forced out many of the objectors. (Barrett. 10/5)
