Final Recommendation Statement: Screening for Atrial Fibrillation With Electrocardiography

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force released today a final recommendation statement on screening for atrial fibrillation with electrocardiography (ECG). The Task Force found insufficient evidence on screening for atrial fibrillation with ECG to prevent strokes. To view the recommendation and the evidence on which it is based, please go here. The final recommendation statement can also be found in the August 7 online issue of JAMA.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Seth Landefeld
"Atrial fibrillation is a major risk factor for stroke in adults age 65 years and older, and often is not detected until someone has a stroke. If atrial fibrillation could be detected earlier, some of these strokes might be avoided. However, we found that more research is needed to determine whether the benefits outweigh the harms of screening for atrial fibrillation with ECG.” – Seth Landefeld, M.D.
