This 132-page report was written at the request of the Peruvian authorities, who asked for assistance in relation to the radiological accident that occurred during non-destructive testing using a nuclear radioactive source in the district of Chilca, Peru, on January 11, 2012. The report gives a detailed account and analysis of the event, as well as the actions taken in order to assist organizations responsible for radiation protection, source safety, and emergency preparedness and response in identifying lessons to be learned that may help to prevent similar accidents. This book, updated in March 2018, addresses many facets of biodefense research, preparedness, and consequence management related to biological warfare. Individual chapters are devoted to understanding the pathogenesis and disease progression associated with bacterial and viral biothreat agents, such as Bacillus anthracis, Ebola virus, and intoxications by toxins such as ricin. These chapters highlight the current state of science for these agents and toxins, and underscore the importance of pursuing basic science interests in these arenas, and maintaining a core pool of subject matter experts. This two-page fact sheet informs healthcare providers of the significant known and potential risks and benefits of the emergency use of the DPP® Ebola Antigen System. Testing should be conducted on specimens from people with signs and symptoms of Ebola virus disease (EVD) and with epidemiological risk factors. This test is intended for circumstances when use of a rapid Ebola antigen test is determined to be more appropriate than use of an Ebola nucleic acid test, which has been demonstrated to be more sensitive in detecting the Ebola virus. The goal of this training program is to prepare emergency response personnel to foster resilience in their peers prior to a critical event or disaster. It is designed to be delivered before an event to build resilience and support within their organizations. The curriculum is segmented in nine modules addressing critical skills that can increase personal resiliency.
