HRSA 2018 Year in Review

a holiday message from the administrator, George Sigounas, MS, Ph.D.
As we begin 2019, I would like to take a moment to reflect on our successes and thank all of you for your commitment and dedication.

With our engaged and mission-oriented staff, HRSA has substantially increased the impact and outreach of our programs. By leveraging our better aligned resources, more efficient operations, and innovative programs, we have made it possible for more individuals and families across the nation to now have access to quality health care services, which in turn improves health outcomes.

In 2019, we will strive to further increase access to quality health care services and improve internal operations through innovation and collaboration.

NHSC Loan Repayment Programs

The National Health Service Corps provides financial assistance to health care professionals in exchange for a commitment to work at approved sites in high-need, underserved areas. Last week the NHSC opened the application cycle for two programs – its Loan Repayment Program (NHSC LRP) and a new Substance Use Disorder Workforce Loan Repayment Program (NHSC SUD Workforce LRP). Both applications will close on Thursday, February 21 at 7:30 p.m. ET.
The NHSC LRP awards up to $50,000 toward student loans in exchange for a two-year commitment to work at approved sites in high-need, underserved areas.
The new NHSC SUD Workforce LRP provides up to $75,000 in exchange for a three-year commitment and expands eligible disciplines and site types for loan repayment. The program is open to health care professionals who provide substance use disorder treatment services at NHSC-approved SUD sites.
Check out Dr. Sigounas’ blog post about our Substance Use Disorder Workforce Loan Repayment Program and why we need more health professionals combating the opioid crisis.

HRSA's National Center for Health Workforce Analysis Releases Updated U.S. Health Workforce Chartbook and State Profiles

HRSA’s National Center for Health Workforce Analysis (NCHWA) recently released an updated U.S. Health Workforce Chartbook that provides estimates for 35 health occupations, including physicians, nurses, dentists, counselors, and laboratory technicians. You can find detailed information on demographics, workforce settings, and geographic distribution in the Chartbook.
NCHWA also updated the U.S. Health Workforce State Profiles as a companion to the Chartbook. Data in the State Profiles correspond to Chartbook information on number of graduates in each profession, total number of providers, and number per capita. The Chartbook and State Profiles were developed as part of HRSA’s effort to make data on the U.S. health workforce more readily available to users. Learn more about NCHWA’s research and reports.

Happy New Year!
