FDA goes after supplement makers touting unproven products
The FDA is cracking down on supplement makers touting products that claim to treat Alzheimer’s disease and other serious conditions. Health officials fired off a dozen warning letters to companies illegally selling products that haven’t been proven safe and effective. One claimed glutathione — the antioxidant it said was in its products — "is the secret to preventing … heart disease, dementia and necessary to treat everything from ADHD, to autism to Alzheimer’s disease.” The warnings come as the agency looks to modernize its approach to supplements. In a statement, Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said he's "concerned that changes in the supplement market may have outpaced the evolution of our own policies and our capacity to manage emerging risks."
