WHO names expert panel on genome editing
The WHO is convening experts next month to come up with a set of global standards on human genome editing — and the organization just announced the experts they're turning to develop those guidelines. The committee's chairs: Dr. Margaret Hamburg, a former FDA commissioner and foreign secretary of the National Academy of Medicine, and Justice Edwin Cameron, who serves on South Africa's highest court. The panel was formed on the heels of researcher He Jiankui's claim that he had edited the DNA of two embryos that resulted in the birth of twins — news that was swiftly criticized by much of the scientific community. The panel will meet in Geneva next month to dig into the ethical, legal, social, and scientific aspects of human genome editing.
