23andMe now predicts Type 2 diabetes risk

Consumer genetics giant 23andMe will begin generating reports on its customers' genetic risk for diabetes 2. That may make good business sense. The disease is on the rise in all quarters, affecting about two in five adults in America. But will the reports be of any more use than existing screening tests? That's up for debate.

So-called polygenic risk scores and traditional screening tests "haven't been compared head to head," the director of Johns Hopkins Comprehensive Diabetes Center told STAT's Rebecca Robbins.
