As STAT's Lev Facher and Kate Sheridan report, Sharpless is a well-regarded cancer doctor and veteran of the research world who hasn't balked at leaving the ivory tower of academia for the commercial world. He co-founded G1 Therapeutics and Sapere Bio, and his NCI entered into a five-year, $215 million partnership with 11 pharma companies to develop cancer immunotherapies.
