Inside STAT: Patients with feared superbug shed large amounts of it from their skin
Patients who carry a feared superbug known as Candida auris shed it in large quantities from their skin, often infecting others in their environment, according to a new study. While scientists have long assumed the fungus could be transmitted this way, the new findings provide researchers with important data as they try to establish the most basic information about it. About a third of the patients who get sick with C. auris die, even though it’s sometimes unclear if the infection itself causes death. STAT’s Helen Branswell has more here.
