New persistent opioid use after postoperative intensive care in US veterans.
This retrospective cohort study within a Veterans' Affairs hospital examined persistent opioid use among patients receiving their initial opioid prescription in the surgical intensive care unit. Researchers found that younger patients and those with a history of substance use disorder were more likely to develop persistent opioid use after an intensive care stay. However, the proportion of patients with persistent opioid use has been declining over time.
