Migrants held in detention camps won’t get flu vaccines

The U.S. doesn’t plan to vaccinate families being held in migrant detention centers against the flu, according to a CNBC report. The news comes amid reports that three children who were being held at the Mexican border died in part from the flu. “I can tell you from personal experience that child deaths are rare events,” Harvard pediatrics professor Dr. Jonathan Winickoff told CNBC. Experts said that current conditions in detention facilities — including the stress of being held and overcrowded and unsanitary quarters — makes it easier for infectious diseases to spread. A U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesperson told CNBC that there has been a “dramatic increase” in the number of medical personnel, including pediatricians, working along the southern border.
