As cases of lung damage linked to vaping soar, FDA opens criminal investigation
As the number of serious lung injuries linked to vaping continues its steady rise, the FDA’s Office of Criminal Investigations is joining the effort to determine what is sickening people who use e-cigarettes. The number of confirmed cases jumped to 530, the CDC said yesterday, up from 380 earlier this week. The majority of cases affect people 18 to 34 years old, and 16% are under 18. Three-fourths of all cases are male. To date, the CDC has confirmed seven deaths. While many who have developed lung problems reported using THC — the active ingredient in cannabis — a number have said they did not vape THC. The issue also has Congress’ attention: A House Energy and Commerce oversight subcommittee will take up the public health threat of e-cigarettes at a hearing on Wednesday.
