CRISPR'ing a savior sibling

Many parents would do just about anything to save their child from a rare disease. That could include CRISPR'ing embryos in order to create so-called “savior siblings.”

STAT’s Andrew Joseph spoke with a Bay Area couple whose daughter has a rare disease and who is in need of a stem cell transplant. The best donor could be a sibling, and the family is attempting to have another child through IVF. They believe CRISPR'ing the embryo could improve the odds for a match, even if the acknowledge the technology might not be safe enough yet.
“If that technology has any applicable means to help solve these genetic disorders, I’m hopeful that they’ll eventually find a way to deploy it in a productive way,” the father told STAT.
