HHS Awards Over $85 Million to Help Health Centers Expand Access to Oral Health Care
September 18 - The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) awarded over $85 million to 298 health centers to expand their oral health service capacity through new infrastructure enhancements. These investments are the first by HRSA to solely focus on oral health infrastructure and will enable HRSA-funded health centers to provide new, or enhance existing, oral health services.
"Health centers play a key role in providing access to a comprehensive range of services Americans need to stay healthy, and that includes high-quality oral health care," said HHS Secretary Alex Azar. "Early detection of oral diseases can prevent much more costly health challenges and improve Americans' health, which is the ultimate goal of President Trump’s vision for our healthcare system. These are the first awards HRSA has ever made soley for health centers' oral healthcare infrastructure, and they will support better access to oral health services in communities across the country, including underserved urban and rural areas."

HHS Awards $374 Million to Programs Supporting Maternal and Child Health
September 12 - The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced approximately $351 million in funding to 56 states, territories, and nonprofit organizations through its Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting Program and approximately $23 million in funding to three new programs aimed at improving maternal health outcomes.

HHS Awards More than $50 Million to Establish New Health Center Sites
September 11 - The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), awarded more than $50 million to fund 77 health centers across 23 states, Puerto Rico, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. This funding provides operational support for new organizations to become HRSA Health Center Program grantees and for existing health centers to establish new service delivery sites.
"HHS aims to help provide all Americans with access to quality healthcare and, ultimately, improve their health. Community health centers play a vital role in that mission, and in the Trump Administration’s vision for healthcare," said HHS Secretary Alex Azar. "Opening new community health centers and creating additional sites of care is a vital way to help expand access to care and improve the health of the nation’s underserved communities, both rural and urban."

HHS Awards $9 Million to Develop New Models to Improve Obstetrics Care in Rural Communities
September 10 - The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), awarded nearly $9 million to launch the Rural Maternity and Obstetrics Management Strategies (RMOMS) program. Recipients from three states, Missouri, New Mexico and Texas, will receive up to $600,000 in a planning year and up to $800,000 in three implementation years to pilot, test, and develop models that improve access to and continuity of maternal obstetrics care in rural communities.
“Strengthening rural and maternal health are important priorities for HHS and the Trump Administration. This program’s investments will support both of these priorities by developing new and innovative networks to improve rural maternal care,” said HHS Secretary Alex Azar. “By testing out approaches through pilot programs, we can lay the groundwork for making a real impact on these important health challenges.”

HRSA Releases Inaugural Report of Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program AIDS Drug Assistance Program Client-Level Data
HRSA's HIV/AIDS Bureau (HAB) this week released the first report on national Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program AIDS Drug Assistance Program client-level data. The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) Annual Client-Level Data Report 2017 (PDF - 659 KB) is the inaugural publication of data submitted through the ADAP Data Report system. The data describe the demographic characteristics of clients accessing ADAP services and the ADAP-funded services used. Data are included for 2014 through 2017, nationally and by state/territory.
This report provides a deeper look at service utilization, demographic, and socioeconomic factors among clients served by RWHAP ADAP. The report also includes client-level data based on age, race/ethnicity, federal poverty level, and health care coverage. |
Helping Emergency Rooms Prepare for Kids in Crisis
At a time when increasing numbers of children are showing up in emergency rooms with mental health issues, less than half of the nation's hospitals have written protocols in place for care coordination and management of kids in crisis – and that number falls to about a third in rural areas, two senior HRSA leaders reported in a recent webcast.
Suicide is now the second leading cause of death among young people, age 10 to 19 years old. And absent immediate intervention, the risk of a suicide attempt or death by self-harm is highest within 30 days of discharge from an emergency department.
Those findings are the impetus behind a new HRSA toolkit to help emergency room staff manage young people in psychiatric distress, said Associate Administrators Dr. Michael Warren and Tom Morris.

With the start of a new school year upon us, no fewer than 15 major metropolitan areas in the U.S. have "hotspots" of unvaccinated children that make them vulnerable to preventable diseases similar to the recent measles outbreak in New York City, experts warned in a recent webcast. The trend has major implications for health centers, health departments, hospitals and schools alike.

National Health Center Training and Technical Assistance Partnerships Funding Opportunity Now Available
HRSA recently announced the availability of $22 million in National Health Center Training and Technical Assistance Partnerships (NTTAP) cooperative agreements funding to provide training and technical (T/TA) to existing and potential Health Center Program award recipients and look-alikes. NTTAPs will provide national-level T/TA to health centers directly and through partnerships..
