How to Train Medical Students in Health Literacy

How to Train Medical Students in Health Literacy

New NAM Commentary on Health Literate Care Curriculum

Health literate organizations need health care professionals who have health literacy knowledge and skills, such as being able to communicate effectively, break down health goals into manageable steps, and connect people with the resources they need to be successful. In collaboration with members of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the National Academies’ Roundtable on Health Literacy, the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell (ZSOM) transformed its curriculum into a Health Literate Care Curriculum.

The Collaborators used the Health Literate Care Model and the AHRQ Health Literacy Universal Precautions Toolkit to comprehensively integrate health literacy into the first two years of ZSOM's medical school curriculum. Learn about the collaboration that produced a Health Literate Care Curriculum and provides an important model for medical schools nationwide in the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) Commentary, A Model Collaboration to Develop a Health Literate Care Curriculum: Preparing the Next Generation of Physicians to Deliver Excellent Patient Outcomes and Experiences.
