Dual alcohol-marijuana breath analyzer could be ready to deploy this year

California-based Hound Laboratories is working on a breath analyzer that can detect both THC and alcohol — and the device could be on the market sometime this year, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. While there are legal limits on alcohol consumption before driving, there are no such limits for THC, the main psychoactive component of marijuana. Unlike alcohol breath tests, which indicate how much of the substance is present, the Hound analyzer will only return a “yes” or “no” reading of whether a person has had THC in their system within the past three hours. More tests still need to be done to help law enforcement officials determine what level of THC constitutes driving impairment.
