‘Just come and do it’ won over a leader at Alphabet’s life science spinout
Vivian Lee, the president of health care platforms at Alphabet life sciences spinout Verily, was nearly wooed by another health system before ultimately deciding to join the health tech company, she told STAT at JPM. Then she had a conversation with Andy Conrad, Verily’s CEO, about a forthcoming book she was writing — "The Long View" — about how to solve America’s health care crisis.
“He said, ‘just come and do whatever’s in that book of yours,’” Lee said. “Then I said ‘Andy, you haven’t read the book.’ He said, ‘I trust you.’”
That won Lee over and captured the essence of Verily, she said.
“It's such a scrappy group of people who in under 5 years have pulled together so many different areas of expertise, so many different, very talented people to develop new products in such short periods of time.”
