Sue Desmond-Hellmann has some answers for you
Sue Desmond-Hellman is stepping down from her post as chief of the Gates Foundation, after a storied career in biotechnology.
The oncologist previously worked on AIDS-related cancer in Uganda, then served as both president of Genentech and chancellor of the University of California, San Francisco. Her experiences in health care are, to say the least, wide-ranging.
Desmond-Hellman fielded questions from STAT subscribers — addressing questions about influences on her career, her next move, and what she’s found most gratifying in her work. And she imparted some wise words: "I know firsthand how easy it is to get caught up and carried away in the excitement of new inventions and discoveries," she said. "But you can’t forget at the end of it all, there’s an individual who is struggling or suffering … my advice would be to know that people are vulnerable and you have a big responsibility."
