Almost half of transgender youth don't share their gender identity with doctors
Nearly half of transgender youth choose not to share their gender identity with their health care provider, according to a small survey conducted at a Pennsylvania clinic that serves that population. Scientists asked 153 transgender youth ages 12-26 about disclosing their gender identity: Although more than three-quarters reported voluntarily disclosing being transgender to a health care provider at some point, 46% also reported intentionally choosing not to share that detail during some instances. Those who were 18 and older, those who hadn't come out to other people, and those who had only come out to someone within the past year were least likely to disclose their gender identity to their doctors. Among the biggest reasons why: Those surveyed said they didn't feel comfortable bringing the subject up and their physicians didn't specifically ask them.
