How the Senate’s $2 trillion coronavirus relief package could boost unemployment aid

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi signaled a tepid endorsement to the massive $2 trillion coronavirus relief package for workers and businesses agreed upon by White House and Senate leaders after midnight Wednesday. The unprecedented rescue package would give direct payments to most Americans, expand unemployment benefits and fund a $367 billion program for small businesses to keep making payroll while workers are forced to stay home. Click here for a look at how the Senate’s coronavirus bill could boost unemployment aid if signed into law by President Trump.

Federal health officials remain deeply concerned about the spread of the coronavirus in the New York metropolitan area. On Tuesday, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said forecasters warned him that the number of confirmed cases in his state “is doubling about every three days.” New York is battling more than 25,000 cases of COVID-19.

The situation is also grim in Spain, which surged past China to now have the world’s second-highest tally of coronavirus deaths. Spain saw a spike of 738 reported deaths overnight — its highest so far in one day.

Meanwhile, a class-action lawsuit filed in Florida this month seeks to "make China pay for what they've done" in its handling of the coronavirus crisis, saying the country acted "negligently.” And Britain's Prince Charles has tested positive for coronavirus after displaying mild symptoms, his office has announced.
