Identifying patient safety problems associated with information technology in general practice: an analysis of incident reports.

This analysis of data from a voluntary reporting system characterizes the types of errors associated with information technology (IT) in Australian general practices. The investigators found that IT introduced new types of errors (for example, choosing the wrong medication to prescribe due to confusing menus) but also exacerbated errors that had previously occurred with paper records (such as entering information into the wrong patient's chart). The benefits and harms of introducing IT into health care are the subject of a recent book.
