Practicing Recovery: Recovery-Oriented Practices in Criminal Justice

In this issue of Practicing Recovery, we look at how diversion programs assist people with mental health and/or substance use conditions access services and reduce sentencing to jails or prisons.
These collaborative approaches between the criminal justice system, behavioral health providers, and individuals with behavioral health conditions and their families are effective at helping people access services instead of incarceration for minor offenses. Many of these programs take an approach that incorporates recovery-oriented treatment and monitoring, with other recovery support services and hope for a positive future.
